Introduction

Going into grad school, I already knew what I wanted to do for my thesis project: 3D rigging. But what was I going to do? Facial rigging? Make an autorigger? Make a tool with a GUI? Try rigging in Houdini? Make a rig that is compatible in multiple softwares? I had so many ideas but couldn’t decide. Then I had come across this company on my Instagram explore feed.

I was immediately intrigued. I had never seen a rig like this before, and I wanted to know more. At this point, I was leaning more towards more stylized rigs. They have always interested me and I find them more fun thatn rigs that have realistic anatomy and deformations.

Another instagram page I had come across was that of Kevin Temmer. He is mainly a 3D animator, but is well versed on how to cheat a rig to get a proper performace to the camera.

The next problem I ran into was time. How would I be able to pull off a crazy complex rig in 6 months? So I began scaling down my project. Out of all the rigging classes I have ever taken, facial rigging was by far my favorite, so I narrowed down my idea a little bit more.

Then I reached the halfway point in my degree which meant I was up for review. And I still didn’t know what to do for my thesis project.
